The basic medicine wheel is usually drawn as a circle with four equal quadrants that look like a times or plus symbol in the center. Then specific colors fill each space, depending upon the lesson or significance designed by the tribe or nation.
There are thousands of versions of medicine wheels that exist, each serving a purpose, depending on the circumstance. What I mean is, there is a medicine wheel for every situation — whether its personal, business or the planting of crops — there is a medicine wheel that methodically helps you to understand what has to be done next.
“Much of the path to learning wisdom is about patience and timing.” – Chief Robert TallTree
This is what society today is still trying to discover. With the way the world has grown and its use of high-powered computers, new discoveries are being made aware of almost daily. Unfortunately, people can only absorb or learn at a speed that is much like the old story of the rabbit and the turtle.
My uncle, Young Thunder, often loved to sit and watch the world as it presented itself…and he would say, “If they only knew how much extra work that they are creating for themselves and stopped to take a breath, they could live a richer life.”
And I would respond by saying, “Why don’t they use the medicine wheel?” Uncle would shake his head and sigh, “If they only could…”
Uncle has returned to our ancestors now but his thoughts are still within my Heart — “If they only could…”
The teachings of most medicine wheels generally start like a compass beginning in the east and moving clockwise – stopping in each direction to discuss the significance of its purpose, until the teacher and the student has completed the circle.
In reality, you will ‘walk’ around the circle again and again. And there are many layers of understanding that unfold as you delve deeper into the medicine wheel teachings.
In fact, you could dedicate your entire life to just one of the sacred directions, and still have much to learn about it.
To discover more about the ancient wisdom of the medicine wheel, and how to use it as a diagnostic tool in your life, The Journey is a simple, yet powerful program that helps you develop a conscious relationship with each of the Sacred Directions.
